day -- in France known as jour maigre (a lean day), a day when
Roman Catholics and others used to abstain from meat and customarily eat fish.
In the RC Church there was a general law of abstinence on all Fridays (unless
feasts), but bishops now urge the faithful volutarily to practise this or some
other form of self-denial. [BD]
