a member of a Christian church upholding the principles of the Reformation or
(loosely) of any church not in communion with Rome. In the time of Luther his
followers called themselves "evangelicals". The name arose from the
Lutheran protest against the recess
of the Diet of Spires (1529) which declared that the religious status quo must
