BD: A sisterhood founded in the late 12th
cent. by Lambert le Begue (see
Beghards). They were free to quit the cloister and to marry, and formerly
flourished in the Low Countries. Germany, France, etc. There are still
communities in Belgium. The cap called a beguin
was named from this sisterhood.
