Rota Sacra Romana — a Roman
Catholic ecclesiastical court of medieval origin composed of auditors under the
presidency of a dean. It was reconstituted by Pius X in 1908 and appears to
take its name form the circular table originally used by the judges at Avignon.
It tries cases and hears appeals from ecclesiastical tribunals. [BD]
