Copts — Christian descendants of
the Ancient Egyptians who became Monophysites and Jacobites and who have
retained the patriarchal chair of Alexandrian since the Council of Chalcedon in
451, which still has nominal jurisdiction over the Ethiopian Church. Coptic
ceased to be a living language in the 16th or early 17th cent. but is still
used in their liturgy. [BD]
