Schismatic followers of Donatus, a Numidian bishop of the 4th cent. who, on
puritanical grounds, opposed the election of Caecilianus to the bishopric of
Carthage (311). Their chief dogma was that the Church was a society of holy
people and that mortal sinners were to be excluded. St. Augustine of Hippo
vigorously combated their heresies. [BD]
