conveying authority to teach in the university. In English use before the 19th
c. confined to the Faculty of Arts (the corresponding title in the other
faculties being doctor): the full designation of the graduate is in L. artium
magister, in Eng. Master of Arts (formerly _of Art), denoted by the
abbreviation M.A. or (now rarely, exc. in the U.S.) A.M.
