after Gregory Palamas
(c. 1296-1350), who became the chief exponent of Hesychasm. the object of
their exercise was to attain a vision of the "Divine Light" which
they held to be God's "energy". Hesychasm
lasted until the 17th cent.; the name is from the Gr. hesychos, quiet. [BD]
