Protevangelium — the first
gospel; a term applied to an apocryphal gospel which has been attributed to St.
James the Less. It was supposed by some critics that all the gospels were based
upon this, but it appears to be the compilation of a Jewish Christian from a
variety of sources and dates from the 2nd century. [BD]
OED2: 1. Name of an apocryphal gospel, attributed to St. James the Less. 2.
Applied to the promise concerning the seed of the woman implied in the curse
upon the serpent (Gen. iii. 15), regarded as the earliest utterance of the
gospel.
