Swedenborgians — followers of
Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), distinguished Swedish scientist and mystic, who
in middle life came to hold himself appointed to reveal the Lord's teachings to
mankind. He taught that Christ is the one god and that the Divine Trinity was
present in him. The New Jerusalem Church or New Church was set up in England in
1787 to propagate his teachings, which differ considerably from those of
accepted Christianity. There are branches of the New Church in the USA,
Australia, New Zealand, and in Europe. Swedenborg wrote all his works in Latin
and he claimed to have witnessed the Last Judgement. [BD]
