Twelfth Night -- the evening before the Twelfth day
(Epiphany) after Christmas, formerly kept as time of merry-making. [ODCC]
Twelfth Night -- there is some dispute about when
Twelfth Night occurs. Twelfth Day is undoubtedly January 6th. In former times
12th Night appears to have been used where 12th Eve might be used today,
referring to the evening of January 5th. In modern times most people would
consider 12th Night to be the night of Jan. 6th, but several respectable
reference books, such as OED, BDPhF, etc., insist that it is the night of the
5th.
